City Park Good and Bad News

Dear Editor,

CITY PARK GOOD NEWS: The City Council voted to support the establishment of a Wessington Springs Park and Recreation Board. It is the goal of the new board to continue to promote various committees to work on different areas of the park, i.e. the ballfield, the pool, the campground, the playground, the tennis court, the ice rink, the field house, etc. The board will establish a plan for various projects, fundraisers and grants, in an effort to maintain and improve the many benefits and amenities our park has to offer.

CITY PARK BAD NEWS: Our cherished park is currently being used as a construction site and lay-down yard for the City College Avenue project. The city minutes do not reflect this decision, or the cost to the city (and taxpayers) to sacrifice large sections of our park for most of the summer, or what monetary agreement was made with the construction company for site rental and reclamation.

I realize that our councilors are elected to make decisions on behalf of the taxpayer, but it is also their duty to inform the taxpayers of their decisions in the minutes and to protect the established public resources and recreation areas in our municipality. Pride in our park should start with our City Council members and employees. Watch out golf course…. when the city starts work on Second Street, they may shorten the course by a few holes to make room for gravel trucks on that side of town!! No notice necessary.

The voice of Wessington Springs is YOU.
