JOYCE ROGERS retired last Wednesday, May 5th and the kitchen at Weskota Manor Avera will never be the same. Joyce worked in the kitchen for 23 years and will be missed by all of her co-workers for her upbeat personality and pleasant smile. Joyce is a southern girl who was born in Friendship, Missouri and grew up in Altus, MO. She still sports a slight southern accent. Joyce and her husband Homer Rogers moved to Wessington Springs on Valentine’s Day in 1957. They raised three sons here: Homer Jr., Mike, and Jess. Joyce has worked for over 50 years in the area. The family first ran the Idle Hour Tavern for many years and then the Virgil Bar before she joined the crew at the Manor kitchen. Joyce is pictured above with her last batch of everyone’s favorite chocolate chip cookies. Joyce commented when asked what she will miss most about her job: “I’ll truly miss all of the residents and all of the good people I’ve worked with.” She continued, “I’ve enjoyed every minute of it!” Joyce was preparing supper when we asked “What are you working on?” “I’m making something they asked for,” she smiled… “a good old Missouri dish.” Joyce can’t walk away from her beloved residents completely, though. She plans on volunteering to come in once a week when the tomatoes come in to make them BLTs. “They just love them!” she said.
