PIERRE– South Dakotan Farmers Union has named Rep. Quinten Burg (D-Wessington Springs) their organization’s House of Representatives Legislator of the Year-2010.

The group also named Sen. Ryan Maher (D-Isabel) as their State Senator of the Year.

The two lawmakers were presented with the awards during South Dakota Farmers Union’s annual Legislative Day at the State Capitol in Pierre on January 26.

Rep. Burg is serving his second consecutive term in the House of Representatives, being elected in 2006 and 2008. He also served in the state legislature from 1998-2004.

“South Dakotans are lucky to have Rep. Burg’s wisdom and experience at work every day of the legislative session,” SDFU President Doug Sombke. “Being a farmer and rancher himself, he brings a wealth of knowledge into the Capitol about rural life and stands up for the farmers and ranchers of this state.”

Sen. Maher was re-elected to his third term in the state Senate last November. SDFU President Doug Sombke said Sen. Maher has been a great supporter of farmers and ranchers in South Dakota throughout his years in the Senate.

SDFU honors two lawmakers each year with Legislator of the Year award.
