Basketball Tournament
The Wessington Springs Spartan basketball teams will be participating in the 281 Conference Basketball Tournaments on January 16 through January 22 in Huron.
The Spartan girls begin the tournament on Friday, January 16 at 5:00 pm vs. James Valley Christian and the James Valley Christian School. The winner of that game will play at 6:30 pm on Monday, January 19 at the Huron Arena vs. the winner of Woonsocket and Hitchcock/Tulare game. The loser between Wessington Springs and James Valley will also play on Monday, January 19 at the Huron Arena at 3:30 pm. Final round action for the girls is Thursday, January 22 at the Huron Arena. The 7th place game at 9:00 am, 5th place at 12:00 pm, 3rd place at 3:00 pm and championship at 6:00 pm.
The Spartan boys basketball team will play Wolsey/Wessington in the first round on Saturday, January 17 at 1:00 pm at the James Valley Christian school. The 2nd round of the boys part of the tourney is Tuesday, January 20 at the Huron Arena. With a win in the first round the Spartan boys would play the winner of Hitchcock/Tulare and Woonsocket at 6:30 pm on Tuesday. A loss would have the boys playing at 3:30 pm on that day. The final round of the boys tournament is also Thursday, January 22 at the Huron Arena. 7th place at 10:30 am, 5th place at 1:30 pm, 3rd place at 4:30 pm, and the championship is at 7:30 pm.
Former Alpena coach to be inducted into 281 Conference Hall of Fame
Former Alpena High School adminstrator, coach and athletic director Wally Weatherford, Armour, will be inducted into the 281 Conference Hall of Fame on Thursday, January 22, at the Huron Arena.
Weatherford coached the Alpena/Woonsocket Wildmen to the 1992 state nine man football championship in the Dakota Dome at Vermillion. He was also successful in other coaching duties at AHS as well as playing a key role in 281 Conference athletic events.
The induction ceremony coincides with the annual 281 Conference Basketball Tournaments, to be held in Huorn January 16-22.
