Duck, Dennis Womeldorf! Good luck, Gary Schwartz. Move over Matt Jones. Lotsa’ luck, Lacy Johnson. Another Cole Hurley? Tough luck, Tim Sorsen! What do all of these people have in common? When you talk about the best athletes in the history of Wessington Springs High School, their names are bound to rise to the top. Womeldorf was a three-sport star that went on to become a Little All-American in basketball at South Dakota State University. Schwartz had the longest discus throw by a school boy IN THE NATION, a 190-ft. super throw that has held the school record since 1961. Jones (Alpena) and Johnson are arguable the best boy and girl basketball stars ever at WSHS. Both tall and graceful, they both headed powerful WSHS cage squads. Multi-sport athletes like Tim Sorsen only come around once in a great while. He was the favorite to win the discus, shot put and 100 yard dash in 1980, the spring after he kicked the winning field goal that gave the Spartans the 1979 state championship in football. The late Cole Hurley starred in football, basketball and track. He still holds a multitude of school record in track and won several state track meet gold medals in things like sprints and the long jump. Muilenburg’s in a class of his own But none of the WSHS legends ever got off to a head start like that of a current WSHS junior. In his first two years at Wessington Springs High School, Cordell Muilenburg has participated in six state events, has been on three state champion teams, has been a member of the FFA National Range team. Muilenburg has set his sights on three more state medals during the current 2009-2010 school year, while participating in cross-country, wrestling, and track. This outstanding student-athlete experienced a taste of success early on in his high school career. As a freshman, Muilenburg competed in three state events, bringing home a state medal in two of those sports. He started off his freshman year with a 21st place medal from the state cross-county meet. He joined cross-county teammates, Mitch and Drew Kraft to bring home the first-ever state championship trophy to WSHS. That winter Cordell traveled with teammate, Kole Kopfmann to the state wrestling tournament in Sioux Falls. Cordell wrestled his way to the medal stand, placing 8th place at 130 pounds. In the spring of his freshman year, Cordell participated in the state track meet in the two-mile relay and the two mile run. Cordell carried that hard work and success into his sophomore year. Not only did Muilenburg participate in three state events, he medaled at all three. Muilenburg joined Mitch, Drew, and Jase Kraft as members of the back-to-back state championship cross-country team. Individually, Muilenburg medaled 13th combining with the Mitch’s 2nd place finish, Drew’s 4th place medal, and Jase Kraft’s 25th place medal to combine for that team title at the state cross-country meet. Last winter, Cordell advanced to the state wrestling meet in Aberdeen. There he earned the 6th place medal at 140 pounds. Last May, at the state track meet in Rapid City Cordell was a member of the state championship two-mile relay team. He also participated in the mile run. This year, Cordell hopes to medal again all three sports. Being a student-athlete, Muilenburg also makes the grade academically. Currently, he is ranked fourth in the junior class with a 3.39 GPA. He was also a member of the National Range team that brought home a trophy last spring.
