TRUE DAKOTAN PHOTO/DUKE WENZEL - THE WSHS 3200M RELAY TEAM took the first place medal at the annual Wessington Springs Early Bird Track Meet on Thursday, April 8. Their time qualified them for the state track meet. Members of the squad include, from left, Drew Kraft, Cordell Mullenburg, Mitch Kraft and Jase Kraft.
Eleven members of the Spartan track & field team traveled to Sioux Falls to participate in the 86th running of the Howard Wood relays on Friday. These athletes were among the 3,000 athletes entered, which was the first of many records broke over the two day event.
The boys’ two-mile relay looked to remain unbeaten by any other B school as they entered into this race. Cordell Muilenburg led the Spartans off then handing the baton to Jase Kraft. Jase ran very well despite stepping on the railing in between the third and fourth turn. Jase kept us in the race with his run before handing the baton to Mitch Kraft. Mitch really opened up and charged through the pack. Drew took the baton running the last leg. Cordell, Mitch, and Drew return from the championship relay at last year’s state track meet. All four of these boys are from the state cross-country championship team this past fall. Their winning time was 8:26.96 and along with their gold medals they received a champion trophy up on the winners’ stand.
