“Open wide”

A HOUSE SPARROW feeds one of her young (right) in a birdhouse in Wessington Springs last week. The house sparrow, mis-named English sparrow, is not actually a sparrow at all, but is a weaver finch, imported from England in 1850. Its range covers all of North America. The house sparrow is often confused with our own native sparrows. the adults are kept busy feeding insects to their hungry, rapidly-growing chicks on the front porch ad the Duke and Karen Wenzel home.
