THE DAY WAS all about mothers last Sunday, May 10. Wessington Springs celebrated motherhood in a fitting way… a special 100th anniversary program at the 1905 Opera house commemorating Governor R.S. Vessey’s signing of the 1909 Mother’s Day proclamation. After the show, people toured the Jerauld County Heritage Center and viewed their collection of vintage wedding dresses. Many then visited Susan and Gail Arnott’s home that was once the home of Governor Vessey. Among all of the excitement Sunday afternoon as people were coming and going into the Vessey house, this Mother Robin pictured above was sitting on her nest out in the front yard. Unfazed by all of the commotion, the bird was showing that even in nature, the mothering instinct is very powerful.
