Congratulations to the Spartans boys basketball team in the state tournament.
I see via the SDHSAA record book that Wessington Springs has had a boys team at a state tournament a couple times in the past. I well remember two years when the Spartans came oh-so-close to going to state but didn't quite make it. In 1962 when I was teaching at WSHS, we got to the regional (Larry Myers, Gary Schwartz, et al.) at the Corn Palace but lost to Murdo. Then in 1974, when I was teaching at Sully Buttes, their team reached the regional finals and eliminated the Spartans (Dean Christenson, Tim Hinrichs, Steve Lee, et al.) by one point in a spectacular game.
Way to go, Spartans! And hello to anyone in the Springs area who is still alive who was a student at WSHS when I was teaching there in 1960-62, only 62 years ago!
