Walter Neuharth, 91, formerly of Wessington Springs and originally from Eureka, SD died Friday, January 16, 2009 at Bixby Knolls Towers Rehab Center in Long Beach, CA. Funeral services were held Friday, January 23rd at 1:00 p.m. at Bayshore Community Church in Long Beach. Interment will be this spring at the Eureka Cemetery.
Walter Daniel Neuharth, son of Christina (Neuharth) and Daniel J. Neuharth, was born October 19, 1917 at Eureka. He married Irene Wahl of Alpena, SD on August 18, 1940. Walter was in the US Army Air Corps 88th Troop Carrier Squadron (438th Troop Carrier Group) serving in England and France during WWII. Following his honorable discharge, they lived in Wessington Springs from 1946 to 1953 where Walter owned a successful retail store, Neuharth’s Menswear. Irene, a nurse, helped organize a 20-bed hospital in Wessington Springs. The Neuharth’s moved to Long Beach in 1953 where Walter was employed with the Long Beach Unified School District. He retired in February 1981. He and Irene traveled all over the world. Walter was a member of the El Bekal Temple Shriners for many years.
Mr. Neuharth is survived by his brother Al Neuharth of Cocoa Beach, FL; son Loren Neuharth of Albuquerque, NM; grandson John Neuharth; granddaughter Julie Buehler; step grandchildren Katie Shectman and John Benz; great granddaughter Claire O’Hearn; and step great grandsons, Oliver and Russell Shectman.
Family members preceding Walter in death include his father on January 14, 1926, his mother on November 23, 1979, and his wife on May 30, 2008.
