Victor Hohn

Victor HohnVictor F. Hohn 86 of rural Woonsocket died Wednesday Sept. 23, 2009 at the Avera Weskota Memorial Medical Center in Wessington Springs. Mass of Christian burial was held at 10:30 AM Saturday Sept. 26, 2009 at St. Wilfrid’s Catholic Church in Woonsocket. Interment was in the church cemetery. Victor Frank Hohn was born on May 7, 1923 at Dimock, SD to Andrew and Mary (Bowar) Hohn. He grew up in the Dimock area and attended the Dimock Parochial School where in the sixth grade he first met his devoted wife Irene. At the age of 15 Victor ventured out on, his own to seek employment. Being a hard worker, he had many jobs in the Worthington, MN and in North Dakota area picking corn by hand. He was, admired by his employers, for his dedication and hard work ethics and they inspired him to continue his life as a farmer. He eventually returned to the Dimock area where he played for many dances in a six, piece band, which included Irene. He loved playing the accordion and guitar and especially enjoyed polka music. On Feb. 14, 1944 he was united in marriage to Irene Baumgart at Plankinton, SD. Following their marriage they farmed in the Aurora, Sanborn and Jerauld County area. Finally settling on their present farm at Woonsocket, where they raised their seven children. After 53 years at this location he retired in 2008. During his life he continued his past time of playing beautiful music on the accordion. He also loved playing card especially poker, meeting many life long friends along the way. Hunting and fishing were always adventures he spoke of often. His life was filled with many up’s and down’s however he always kept a positive attitude and enjoyed meeting and visiting his many friends. But most of all he loved to spend time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Victor was a member of St. Wilfrid’s Catholic Church. Victor is survived by his wife Irene of rural Woonsocket, his seven children Harlen and his wife Dee of Sioux Falls, Ronald of Woonsocket, Dianne Golay and her husband Dan of Sioux Falls, Darrell and his wife Marcia of Beresford, Marilyn Hinrichs and her husband Calvin of Wessington Springs, Glen and his wife Val of Woonsocket and Merle and his wife Jean of Huron, 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; 1 sister-in-law Rita Hohn of St. Ansgar, IA, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers Herbert, Arthur, Werner, Sylvester and Almond, one grandson Andrew George Hohn and one great granddaughter Hannah Binkerd.
