Vernie M. Ford, 95, of Yankton, SD, died Monday, February 16, 2009 at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton. Funeral services were held Monday, February 23, 2009 at First United Methodist Church in Yankton with Rev. Dean Trapp officiating. Burial was in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Yankton.
She was born on October 5, 1913 in Aurora County, SD to Harry Everett and Jennie Almira (Padget) Monteith. She was raised in Jerauld County, SD. After high school, she attended teacher’s training in Wessington Springs and taught until she was married. On September 21, 1939 she married Harvey Joseph Ford in Mitchell. They lived in Woonsocket, Chamberlain and Phillip, until moving to Yankton in 1956. Vernie was a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was involved in PTA and was a Sunday school teacher and secretary. She was also active in United Methodist Women and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Yankton. Vernie loved to sew, crochet and knit, but her special loves were her violets, other indoor plants and her garden. She was the quintessential letter writer.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol (Dennis) Preslicka of Iowa City, IA; a son, James (Donna) Ford of San Dimas, CA; a daughter-in-law Gretchen Ford of Custer, SD; six grandchildren: James (Amy Preslicka of Iowa City, IA, Bradley (Christine) Ford of Maplewood, MO; Hannah Ford of Custer, SD. She is also survived by four great grandchildren: Michael, Donna and Andrew Preslicka and Sylvan Asplund; a sister, Floy Hull of East Moine, IL; and nieces and nephews.
Vernie was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey; a son, Melvin Ford; a daughter Karen Ford at birth; her parents; and two sisters, Reva Montei
