Montee J. Powell

Montee J. Powell 79 of Wessington Springs died late Saturday evening April 3, 2010 at the Avera Weskota Memorial Medical Center in Wessington Springs.

Funeral service was held Wednesday April 7, 2010 at the Foothills Bible Fellowship Church (formerly the Free Methodist Church) with Pastor Sara Dean officiating. Interment was at Hope Cemetery with military rites by the Willman-Fee American Legion Post 14.

Montee J. Powell was born August 13, 1930 at Wessington Springs, SD to Burl and Marion (Holcomb) Powell. Je attended Linn and Powell rural schools, and graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1948.

He worked on the family farm until he was inducted into the US Air Force at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas in April 1951 and served with the 41st Fighter Squadron in Japan for 30 months. Upon completing 4 years in the Air Force, he returned to the farm in April 1955.

Montee was united in marriage to Norma Hurley on July 21, 1957 in Wessington Springs. They made their home on a farm west of town.

To this union three children were born, two sons Allen and Larry, and one daughter Susan.

He was a member of the Templeton UCC Church, American Legion, and VFW. Following, an extended heart condition, Montee and Norma moved into Wessington Springs in July 1998.

Montee drove school bus for the Wessington Springs School District for 20 years, greatly enjoying time spent with the kids. He was very active with his grandchildren’s football, basketball, volleyball, track, baseball and rodeo. He attended and enjoyed many proms, homecomings, plays and concerts.

He is survived by his wife Norma of Wessington Springs, two sons Allen Powell and his wife Bonnie, and Larry Powell all of Wessington Springs, one daughter, Susan Olson of Huron, 8 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and 5 step great-grandchildren, 1 brother Lynn Powell and his wife Pat of Sioux Falls and 1 sister Jean Olson and her husband Elliott of Elk Grove, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
