OBITUARY
Lloyd John Costello
Lloyd John Costello, formerly of Brandon, died April 30, 2010 at Bethany Lutheran Home in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services will be Tuesday May 4th at the Brandon Lutheran Church in Brandon, SD with Pastor Dennis Bossman officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery at Wessington Springs at 4:00 pm.
Friends may call at the church on Tuesday one hour prior to the service and at the Basham Funeral Home in Wessington Springs Tuesday from 3-3:45 with a prayer service at 3:45 pm.
Lloyd was born June 14, 1945 to Ralph and Agnes (Bill) Costello in Mitchell, SD. He grew up in Wessington Springs, SD where he was confirmed in the United Church of Christ and graduated from High School in 1964. Lloyd then attended Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls and completed a program in Accounting in 1966. He worked as an accountant at the Fred Assum Drug Store in Sioux Falls for several years. Soon after, Lloyd began working with the Brandon Valley School as janitor. After 27 years of service, Lloyd was forced to retire in 2005 due to ill health. Lloyd has lived the last four years at Bethany Lutheran Home in Sioux Falls.
Lloyd has always been an avid sports fan beginning with the Springs Owls and Wessington Springs Spartans during his school years. While working at Brandon Valley High School, Lloyd covered the gym for athletic competitions for many years and attended nearly every home athletic event for twenty-five years as well as going to out of town games and tournaments.
Lloyd’s commitment to the BVHS sports events resulted in him receiving membership in the Brandon Valley Hall of Fame award in February 2003. Lloyd also followed and attended many games including Kansas City Royals Baseball, the Sioux Falls Canaries, the Green Bay Packers, and “sometimes” the Minnesota Vikings and Twins.
For fourteen years, Lloyd’s constant companion and friend was his little dog Smoky. Lloyd’s family was important to Lloyd and he attended many family gatherings including weddings, birthday parties, and holiday events. Lloyd is survived by one brother, Gene (Joan) of Sioux Falls, and two sisters, Mary (Marion) of Brandon, and Dorothy (Frank) Ames of Brooklyn Center, MN; nieces, Patricia, Penny, Susan, Cheryl, Carol, Barb, Lisa, Melissa, and Traci; nephews, Michael, Matthew, Jason, and Jeff; and several grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Dick and Jim, and two sisters. LaVonne and Connie.
