Keith Orin Schaller

Keith SchallerKeith Orin Schaller, 75, passed away Friday, November 20, 2009, at his home in Wessington Springs. His funeral will be Tuesday, November 24 at 2:30pm at the Foothills Bible Fellowship ( Free Methodist Church) in Wessington Springs. Keith was born September 14, 1934 at the home of his grandparents, George and Lucy (Romig) Schaller, in rural Wessington Springs. He was the only child of Eugene and Rose (Merz) Schaller. He attended rural school in Jerauld County through the 8th grade. He lived and worked with his Uncle Walter Merz for a number of years. He worked for Wilfred Grohs on the farm. He lived with his grandparents and worked for Bjorke in Wessington Springs, later moving to Alpena working for George Hackworth learning blacksmithing. He also worked for a telephone company in Alpena. At one time in the 1950’s Keith was rated as the number one certified welder in South Dakota. While working for Leonard Linafelter, Keith met Louise Hines. They were married in Huron, November 27, 1955. He worked as a blacksmith in Alpena before he ran his own blacksmith shop in Storla and provided a portable welding service. Later, they settled on a farm near Lane, SD. He retired to Wessington Springs in 1989. To this union three children were born. Survivors include his wife, Louise, daughters Debera Starr of Alpena, Dorrie (Spencer) Grubb of Wessington Springs, and son Lorin (Bev) of Woonsocket, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his grandparents and parents.
