Harold Steichen
Harold Steichen, 90, of rural Woonsocket died early Sunday morning June 17, 2012 at the Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket.
Burial was in the St. Wilfrid’s Church cemetery. Harold was born on May 21, 1922 in Blaine Township, Jerauld County, SD to Joe E. and Clara (Arenes) Steichen.
He attended rural Goergen Country School. He farmed with his father, and one brother Lester, on the family farm where he resided resided his entire life.
On May 24, 2012 he became a resident at the Praire View Care Center after suffering from an un-repairable back injury.
He was a member of St. Wilfreds Catholic Church.
In 1958 he bought his first truck, with his brother Lester, and they began their own trucking and corn shelling business.
He met a beautiful German girl in 1958, which he made his wife one year later. On November 17, 1959 he was married to Mariechen (Marie) Kreyenschmidt. They adopted two children, Robert and Kathleen, whom they raised and loved on the family farm.
He very much enjoyed watching his grandchildren Brayden and McKenzy being raised on the family farm that he worked so hard on. It was the highlight of his day to see them stop by and visit him frequently. He also became quite fond of the new family dog “Charlie”.
He is survived by his two children Robert Steichen of Sioux Falls, SD and Kathleen and husband Shawn Peterson of Woonsocket, SD, six grandchildren Brayden, McKenzy, Brittney, Ashley, Stephanie, and Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marie (Kreyenschmidt), one sister Luella (Steichen) Jamison, four brothers, Luverne, Slyvester, Lester and Alfred.
