GEORGE MARVIN POWELL
George Marvin Powell 88 of Wessington Springs, died early Saturday morning April 24, 2010 at the Weskota Manor/Avera Health. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:00 PM at the United Church of Christ with Pastor Sara Olson Dean officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery with military rites by the Willman-Fee American Legion Post 14.
George Marvin Powell was born to George Joseph and Madge Leora (Homewood) Powell in Media Township on March 25, 1922. Both of his parents were also born in Media Township with Madge born on the family farm.
Marvin, a lifetime member of Templeton Church was baptized in 1922 and joined the church with Rev. Robinson in 1936 with a group of boy scouts.
He attended Miller rural school which was later renamed Beers School in grades 1-5 after the family moved to the family farm (Homewood) farm he completed grade school at the Homewood School.
He graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1940, attended South Dakota State for a short time and returned home to work on the family farm.
He enlisted in the Army and served from 1943 – 1946, serving in Belgium, France, and Germany. He received a presidential citation for combat duties, was awarded the combat infantry badge and later received the bronze star.
On June 18, 1955, he married Beverly Fischer at Rose Hill Presbyterian Church. Three children were born, Ted, Vernon and Nadene.
Marvin was a quiet, loving man who was always thinking about others. He enjoyed hosting big celebrations and attended all family celebrations, especially baseball games. He enjoyed traveling with his family and loved quarter horses and raising hereford, and was proud to have a century farm.
He was a member of the Templeton Church, a loyal member of the Masonic Lodge, VFW, American Legion and the Buggy Seat Cowboys.
Last fall he was awarded the honor of traveling on the SD Honor Flight to Washington, DC and enjoyed ever minute of it.
He is survived by his Wife Beverly of 54 years of Wessington Springs and his three children George T. (Jennifer) Powell of Yankton, Vernon Powell of Wessington Springs and Nadene Powell of Sioux Falls, 6 grandchildren Addie (Jim) Vortherms, Meghan Powell, George Ian Powell, Ethan Powell, Victoria Powell and Chanze Powell, two sisters Marian Nelson of Lake Preston and Ethel Jane (Ray) Zimmer of Omaha, Neb.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother-in-law Arnold Nelson and a nephew Jeff Zimmer.
