Genevieve Petrosky died September 28, 2009 in Florence, Oregon surrounded by her family. She had just celebrated her 99th birthday with family and friends at Spruce Point where she had lived for the past five years.
She was born August 8,1910 to James Madden and Margaret (Maggie Reindl) Madden on the Madden farm southwest of Wessington Springs. She spent the first 67 years of her life in South Dakota, growing up in the Wessington Springs area and marrying Edward C. Petrosky. They farmed the John Petrosky/Frances Dusek homestead through the 1930’s and 40’s. In 1950 they moved to Rapid City and lived in the Black Hills area until 1978, when they moved to California and then later she moved to Oregon to be near her daughters.
Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband Ed Petrosky and two daughters, Betty Walker and Eileen Andersen and her brother Anton (Tony) Madden.
Her surviving children are Margaret Fox of Montana, Myrna Vesely-Holden of California, Randal Petrosky of North Carolina, Barbra Travalent of Oregon and Mary Kay Howard-Rupert of Oregon.
She had numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandson whom she held on her lap at her 99th birthday party.
Genevieve remained active all her life and was still able to walk several blocks before being taken rather quickly by pneumonia.
She loved the family get-to-gathers with all the little children. She was always ready to try something new whether a cruise to Alaska or going swimming on her 90th birthday or her first Krispy Kreme doughnut at 92 (she made the TV news). She will be missed deeply by all her family and many friends.
Mass services were held at St. Mary’s Our Lady of the Dunes Church on Oct. 5, 2009. Her cremains will be taken, at a later time, to the Black Hills to be buried beside her husband.
