Frederick A. “Fred” Johnson

johnson-fredrickFrederick A. “Fred” Johnson, 97, Mitchell, formerly of Flandreau, died Monday, March 2, 2009 at Firesteel Healthcare Center, Mitchell. Funeral services were held Thursday, March 5. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery, Mitchell.

He was born on December 11, 1911 at a farm home in Blinsmoen Township to John K. and Johanna Johnson.

He attended a year and a half at rural Blinsmoen School and then moved to Flandreau. He graduated from high school in 1930.

He received a Bachelor of Science degree from South Dakota State University, Brookings, in 1936 and a master’s degree in administration in 1962.

He was a teacher and administrator for 36 years in these schools: Franklin, Ramona, Fedora, Lane, and elementary principal at Wessington Springs.

On August 11, 1939 he married Calla Huska of Brookings. She died on April 2, 1986.

On September 8, 1990, he married Gertrude Benson of Flandreau.

He is survived by a son, Gerald and wife Diane; three stepdaughters, Betty Haak and husband Jerome, Dell Rapids; Judi Houstler and husband John, Blunt; and Barbara Stahl and husband Jerald, Onida; nine grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, one sister-in-law, two brothers-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by both his wives, his parents, five sisters, eight brothers, six brothers-in-law, four sisters-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.
