OBITUARY

Doris Liebnow,

Doris Liebnow, age 86, of Wolsey, died Friday, May 11, 2012, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

Her funeral service was held Thursday, May 17, 2012, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wolsey with Rev. L. Scott Spiehs officiating. Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron.

Doris Viola Liebnow was born August 24, 1925, to Rudolph and Emma (Elias) Borkowski in Wessington Springs, South Dakota. After attending Wessington Springs Junior College in Wessington Springs, she taught at EDDY School for four years.

She married Herschel Liebnow July 31, 1948, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wolsey. After her marriage, she taught at Sunnyside School in Dearborn Township for four years.

Doris taught Sunday school for most of her life and also Bible class and Confirmation classes at St. John’s Lutheran Church. She worked side by side with Herschel on their dairy farm and loved every minute of it. She volunteered in 4-H for over fifty years, including serving as a 4-H leader for forty years. In addition, she raised and showed Southdown sheep and rabbits at the South Dakota State Fair. Doris often remarked that she had “kept the wheels on the car hot” for many years by hauling her grandchildren to various activities. Her favorite pastimes and hobbies included crocheting and spending time with her grandchildren and family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her infant son Roger David; her daughter, Jodi Ann Songer; and two brothers, Harold Borkowski and Vernon Borkowski.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her husband, Herschel of rural Wolsey; one daughter, Joyce (Dan) Shudak of Yankton; two sons, Rodney (Christy) Liebnow of Wolsey and Ronald (Carol) Liebnow of Huron; her son-in-law, Don Songer of Wolsey; two sisters, Lois Warfield of Fairfax, Virginia and Edna (Willard) Snyder of Cottage Grove, Minnesota; one brother, Walter (Marianna) Borkowski of Wessington Springs; two sisters-in-law, Esther Borkowski of Huron and Penny Borkowski of Wessington Springs; six grandchildren, Michelle (Shudak) Waldner, Nick Shudak, Blaine Liebnow, Brianna Songer, Nikkita Songer and Caleb Liebnow; four great grandchildren, Amanda Waldner, Joshua Waldner, Cooper Shudak and Sophia Shudak; and numerous nieces and nephews.
