Youth Wrestlers Find Success in Post Season

A large group of 14 Pony Hills wrestlers made their way across the mat at regions last week with a dozen of the local student athletes advancing to state. Wrestlers will head to The Monument in Rapid City March 15-17 to compete at the state level. WSHS ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES HONORED

Spartans fans from near and far packed the bleachers last month to welcome the newest inductees to the WSHS Hall of Fame. Hall of Fame committee member and longtime newspaper publisher, editor and sports writer Craig Wenzel served as the evening’s emcee.

On Tuesday, February 20 the Wessington Springs Spartans girls basketball team hosted Gregory in a Region 5 game. The Spartans jumped to a quick 6-0 lead and went on to hold a 12-8 lead after one quarter. The Spartans were able to increase their lead to 11 by halftime by outscoring Gregory 15-8 in 2nd quarter. The Spartans had a big quarter offensively in the 3rd quarter by scoring 18 points and held a 45-26 lead going into final quarter of play. The Spartans cruised to a 54-33 victory from there. Avery Orth led the way with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Carissa Scheel had 15 points and nine rebounds. Alyssa Grohs had nine points, six rebounds and four assists.
