Notes from the American Legion Auxiliary: March 18 Meeting

American Legion Auxiliary met on Monday March 18, 2024 with 13 members present.

President Judy Winegar opened the meeting with a prayer by Chaplain Marla Ness, Pledge of Allegiance and Auxiliary Creed.

Guests for the meeting were the 5th and 6th grade students that entered the poem and essay contest along with their parents and grandparents. We had three essays and four poems that were all read by the students. Thank you to their teacher Mrs. Polly for encouraging these students to enter their essays and poems. These will be sent to district level then will be judged this week. Good luck to all students and thank you for remembering our veterans and families.

Seven officers answered roll call.

The Secretary report was read and approved as read.

The Treasurer report was given and approved as read.

We have one Girls’ State delegate which is Taylor Braun, Sheila will talk to the Girls’ State chair and get the fee paid for her to attend.

Old Business: Membership was 124 members. Thank you to Connie McLaughlin for all the extra work. Volunteer hours need to be turned into Judy by April 1.

District Meeting updates: President Judy reported on the Charter for Auxiliary which was destroyed in the tornado and needs to update. She has been doing some research and has found some information that was very helpful and will get it started. A lady from National level has volunteered to help get this set up again.

Saturday April 28 will be a memorial for lifetime member Alice Willman with location to be announced. Her family will provide ham and buns and the Auxiliary will furnish bars and help serve.

Poppy Day will be Friday May 24. A sign-up sheet will be passed around at the May meeting for workers.

The new district Chairman will be Linda Holms. The state convention will be held in Pierre June 21-23. Judy plans to attend if anybody would like to go along.

May will be the election of officers – Joyce Krueger is on the nominating committee.

Great News! Lifetime member Verla Barber was nominated for Member of the Year by our organization. Her nomination was sent into the district level. Her name was announced as the Grand Winner at the District meeting. At our monthly meeting President Judy announced that Verla was the Grand winner. She was presented with a lapel pin and lots of congratulations! Now her nomination will be presented to the state level. Let’s all wish Verla good luck!

Next meeting will be Monday May 20. With no further business to discuss the meeting was adjourned.
