If you love hunting but you aren’t fortunate enough to own land, or the cash it sometimes takes to gain access to private land you can always go to the public areas where approximately 3,200 acres of land is available.
Jerauld County has 13 SD Dept. of Game, Fish & Parks Game Production areas (GPA) and U.S. Waterfowl Production Areas (WPA) that are open to public shooting.
Ranging from the huge 960 acre Jackson area — 4 miles south of Lane– to the miniscule 13-acre Hoarty WPA –5 mile west, 2 1/2 N of Wessington Springs– they are open during the hunting seasons. go to http://www.sdgfp.info/Publications/PublicHuntingAreas.PDF to download/print the entire state public access area list at the Game, Fish & Parks website.
Of course road hunting is legal in South Dakota, but sometimes the rules are complicated and the consequences might include an angry landowner if you shoot too near (660 feet) an occupied homestead, school, church or herd of livestock.
Walking road weedy road ditches next to cropland produces roosters. To get up to speed on the rules of road hunting, see your 2009 SD hunting guide.
Have fun!
