Just in time for National Poetry month celebrated in April across the country, Wessington Springs High School English teacher Devena Jackson informed the True Dakotan that “some very good poems are coming out of my 8th grade unit.” With the students’ permission, she shared them with the newspaper for publication and can be viewed below.
Love, Norma Jeane
By: Mica Muñoz
In a city full of stars, I’m Norma Jeane.
Behind the bright lights, not everything’s as it seems.
I smile big, but inside, I’m not okay;
There’s more to me than the roles I play.
Growing up was hard, always moving, never still,
Hoping each new place would fill
The empty space in my heart,
But I always ended up back at the start.
When I became famous, I thought life would be sweet,
But it was just more lonely, even with every tweet.
The spotlight’s bright, but it hides the real me,
The girl who wishes for the world,
Searching for where she’s meant to be.
I wanted a family, someone to love me true,
But it never worked out, no matter what I’d do.
My heart’s been broken more than once, more than twice.
Hoping for love, I paid a high price.
The saddest part, a dream that never came true,
A baby I lost, it left me so blue.
I dreamed of holding my little one tight,
But that dream faded out of sight.
So here I am, writing to you,
Showing the side of me that’s true.
Beyond the movies, the fame, the light,
I’m just Norma Jeane, trying to fight.
I hope this lets you see
The real person, the real me.
Struggling, hoping, day by day,
To find my place, my own way.

A Musical Afternoon
By: Felicity Ormsmith
When I was seven
I stayed at my grandparents’ house for the weekend.
And during the afternoon,
I heard my nana on the piano
Playing a tune.
I sat on the bench next to her
As she played her songs.
Not a single note she played was wrong.
The sounds ticked my ears,
Each note being so wonderfully clear.
When the music played no more
She asked me if I wanted a go,
But as we soon found out
My skills were very poor.
But she saw my passion
And decided to teach me old-fashioned.
I’m overjoyed she decided to teach me
Because the rest is history.
Runner
By: Brooke Mohling
Running, jumping, and running again,
Breathing heavily,
I pace and chase the people in front of me,
Waiting,
The sound of my feet hitting the track.
Patiently,
I make my final lap and taste the victory.
Passionate,
It’s overcrowded, but I’m there first.
Fast,
I met my goals and pleased myself.

I ran in the cold, and I ran in the heat.
Exhilarating,
My legs are flying through the air quickly.
Calm,
Good day and bad days I try my hardest.
Determination,
Whether I’m by myself or with a partner.
Strong,
There is no option to stop or yield to me.
Persistence.
Picking the Next Great One
By: Hayes Christensen
When I sit atop the horse
Trotting along
The white cows walk by,
Wondrous and nice
Falling asleep from the
Smooth trot
Riding along the pasture
Studying, attentive
Studying every feature of that bull
Shape and soundness
Looking and observing intensely.

Adjusting my vision to look at each aspect
Study once more
Then I decide he’s the next great for me
Second opinion
And they like him; we agree
Final decision
Nice!
Deal’s done
Bought
Happiness
He’s the one.
Dirt Bikes
By: Paxton Walz
When I think of
Dirt bikes
They take over my mind
Vroom!
As my fingers let go of the clutch
Braaaaaaap!!
Then I switch gears
Click!
The bike speeds up
Revving engine
My mind is racing.

All of a sudden
Boom!!!
The bike blew up.
Classic Yamaha
The bike is losing control
Yikes!
Then it pulls to a stop
Urch!!
That was fun while it lasted
But expensive.
That was the last time I ever rode a Yamaha.
