Pastor Jim Holthus, a Lane-area native who serves as a Lutheran minister in Minnesota (go figure) stopped in the True Dakotan office recently with a couple of old pictures of the Springs swimming pool. Jim had taken the photographs in 1970 when he was the lifeguard

The Springs pool -- around 1970-- when Jim Holthus was lifeguard. This is a composite photo of two that he had taken.

A lot of native residents remember the years of the old swimming pool and its five story diving platform on the north end. When 1970 arrived the platform had been replaced by the one-story diving tower (shown above at left). A lifeguard station was added (center of the pool above), but the old slide (right) that now is located in the south park was still in service at the pool. The photo at right shows two girls as they watched “a guy named Terry” perform a pretty good looking jackknife dive. You can see “Terry” above the old cement block bathhouse, in the sky to the right of the water tank. A pretty “cool” bicycle from the ‘70s is shown at left. –Craig Wenzel

Owls will end home season this Thursday night

The Wessington Springs Owls amateur baseball team had just two games this week.

On Thursday they traveled to Plankinton for a Pony Hills matchup. The Owls just could not string enough hits together to beat Plankinton and lost 7-1.

Kaleb Kopfmann led the offense with two hits and scored the only run on a single by Kyle McLaughlin. Adam Kaus had the only other hit for the Owls. Kaus was also the losing pitcher going 3and 2/3 of an inning before Jay Fischer can on in relief. Fischer was able to keep Plankinton from scoring the rest of the way, but the offense never got on track.

The following night the Owls made the trip up to Redfield. Once again the Owls had a lot of hard hits, but were not able to find many gaps in the Redfield defense.

Redfield started off hot with eleven runs in the first off of starting pitcher Kaleb Kopfmann. They added three more runs later in the game to make the final score 14-0. Nathan Hainy relieved Kopfmann in the bottom of the first.

Offensively, Kopfmann again had the hot bat collecting two more hits. Adam Kaus, Hainy, Kole Kopfmann, and Drew Kraft all had one hit apiece.

With the two losses, the Owls are now 6-7 on the season and 5-4 in league play.

The Owls will have their final home game of the season Thursday, July 8 as they host Chamberlain in a Pony Hills League game. They will then travel to 4-Corners on Sunday, July 11 for a make-up game.

Our friend and former Wessington Springs businessman Dale Leischner, of Buffalo, Wyoming, wrote a comment on truedakotan.com when he read about the flooding we’ve had lately. “I do not remember anything like this. I remember everyone praying for rain and then complaining about Fred’s low rain gauge readings.”

Of course Dale was talking about longtime weather recorder Fred Marken and the dry years of the 1970s when farmers and businessmen were leaving the area with empty pockets. Fred lived to be 100 years old and was a fun-loving guy. When he talked about his weather report he would say, “I may not be right, but I’m OFFICIAL!”

Today is much different from the 1970s as we have already reached half of a year’s annual average precipitation during the month of June alone.

People were sandbagging on the northeast edge of Woonsocket on Wednesday and Thursday of last week, trying to stop the Sand Creek from flooding the town.

And homes and businesses in Wessington Springs took on some water during the 4.3 inch rain that fell on Sunday night/early Monday morning of June 20-21.

Farmers, and the rural roads that serve them, have taken the brunt of the impact so far. With 10 inches of rain in a month, the normal farm work has been stopped. Erosion has also been tough on fields filled with tender crop plants.

Another monster thunderstorm swept across Huron and the Alpena portion of Jerauld County on Saturday night of this past weekend. That one sent unwanted water to Woonsocket, another town that is suffering with flooding.

A farmer from south of town, Tom Hoefert put a new spin on things when I talked to him in front of the Humm Dinger last week. “We used to brag to the neighbors that we got more rain than they did,” he said. “Now we say, I only got twenty hundreds last night, what’d you get?”

All things eventually come to an end… and it’s likely that later this summer we’ll ask ourselves, “Why couldn’t we have saved a little of that June rain for later?”

Weather trivia:

The True Dakotan has printed regular weekly weather information from dedicated local folks for 35 years. They are:

2. Stanley Zak

3. Verla Barber

4. Fred Marken

5. Don L. Wenzel

A luncheon was also held at the Springs Inn on Saturday where 100 people enjoyed a buffet.. Former Lane students and teachers gathered to share stories and reminisce about days gone by. It was a fun day to help keep the memories of Lane School alive. Half of the crowd that attended the banquet are shown at left.

The Lane All School Alumni reunion was held on Saturday, June 26, 2010, with 95 former graduates, non grads and their spouses and children returning and enjoying the noon buffet that was served at the Springs Inn in Wessington Springs.

Duke Wenzel from the True Dakotan took pictures of the group and Diane Scheel Roeber, Lane Graduate, offered the prayer.

Several door prizes were awarded prior to the business meeting which was called to order by Dennis Scheel, alumni association president. Minutes of the July 5, 2008 were read and approved with no new additions or corrections. The financial report was given and approved, also. The family of Wilma Miller Noyes made a memorial donation in the amount of $600.00 to the alumni association. Monies to be used for renovating and keeping up the Trojan Park in Lane.

Dennis thanked all who had assisted in any way to make this reunion a success and asked those attending to give Jon and Carla Niemeyer a round of applause for the delicious meal that they prepared for us. Norm Tapken offered a couple of “clean” jokes which everyone enjoyed.

The group recognized Alta Noltensmeier Beckman, a 1929 graduate, for her recently celebrated 100th birthday. Donetta Neelan Casane from Florida was introduced as having come the farthest. Dorothy Lillehaug Erickson from the Class of 1940 was presented with a corsage and free dinner, a gift from her classmate, Lowell Endahl from Alexandria, VA. The Class of 1960 were introduced as celebrating their 50th reunion. A moment of silence was offered in memory of Mrs. Rosemary Swenson, a former school teacher in Lane, who was recently killed in a truck-car accident near Woonsocket.

There being no old business, the group voted to have our next reunion in two years to be held on Saturday, June 30. 2012 at the Springs Inn again for a noon buffet.

Viola Fuerst, Secretary-Treasurer of the Alumni Association, tendered her resignation after having donated 30 years to the alumni. She received a generous round of applause for her dedication to the association and was given a potted plant for her many years of service. The new slate of officers were presented and approved. They are: Elton Kaus, president; Terry Scheel, vice president; Dennis Scheel, secretary-treasurer and Patricia Schroeder Adam, member-at-large.

Before the meeting adjourned, Dennis reported that there were approximately 25 more Lane Centennial Books available to be sold.

The group were invited to stay and visit during the afternoon at the cafe or they could meet over in Lane at the community center/museum. Several returned to Lane and enjoyed reminiscing with old friends and classmates. Cookies, bars, coffee and cold drinks were served throughout the afternoon.

Even the rain that came during the afternoon, did not deter the wonderful time that everyone enjoyed. The mosquitos, also seemed to enjoy all those who were having a fun day.

Again thanks to all alumni that helped in any way to make this reunion such a success. It takes dedicated members attending our meetings and making suggestions that makes the final outcome a true success and appreciated by all those who return back to their “home town”.
