County split on tax freeze election
Measure fails by 36 votes

A surprisingly small number of voters turned out to defeat a tax freeze opt out during a special election in Jerauld County on Tuesday, March 20.
According to figures released from the Jerauld County Auditor’s Office, the measure failed by a 52.4 percent to 47.6 percent margin with 391 votes against and 355 votes in favor, a narrow margin of just 36 votes.

Well, the time has come.
Jerauld County voters will go to the polls on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 to render a decision on a tax freeze opt out special election that affects nearly every human in Jerauld County.
The election calls for a tax freeze opt out of $450,000 per year for the next eight years to pay for highway and bridge improvements in Jerauld
Weskota Manor Avera Listed In US News & World Report
Three Avera nursing homes were recently listed in the US News and World Report rankings as Best Nursing Homes in 2012.
Weskota Manor Avera, Wessington Springs, Avera Brady Health and Rehab, Mitchell, and Platte Care Center Avera, Platte, all received five stars from the Federal Government’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. A facility’s overall ranking is geared to its performance in health inspections, nurse staffing, and medical care.
Alpena road is just one of the major road and bridge repairs that are needed in Jerauld County

221st Street (Alpena Road) -- One of the many rough spots on the road west of Alpena can be seen above. Alpena is shown in the background on the right side of the road. The Alpena Road is one of six immediate projects that would be undertaken in Jerauld County if a tax freeze opt out election passes on March 20. The Jerauld County commission is currently looking to re-grade and re-pave the road from Alpena to US Highway 281. The total cost would be $2.5 million and would be paid for using tax funds to a SIB (State Infrastructure Bank) loan. Addition of Jack Link’s gives Springs Day a county theme
The annual Wessington Springs day at the South Dakota state legislature in Pierre was held on Tuesday, February 14.
Wessington Springs Area Development vice-president, Quinten Burg, Coordinator, Natalie Wolfskill, Avera Weskota Memorial Medical Center Marketing Coordinator, Kim Burg, WSHS teacher, Charlotte Mohling and three of her students hosted the day.
The event was sponsored by the Wessington Springs Area Development Corp., Avera Weskota Memorial Medical Center, Weskota Manor Avera, Wessington Springs School District 36 and LSI, of Alpena.
VFW Patriot’s Pen essay contest winners
THE 2012 VFW ESSAY CONTEST WINNERS were announced by the Wessington Springs Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5548 recently. The contest was open to students 6-8 grades in Woonsocket and Wessington Springs. Two of the winners are shown above receiving $25 checks for the outstanding essays. VFW essay chairman Walter Borkowski handed out the checks to Sierra Brodkorb (Wessington Springs) center, and Taylar Jean Burkel (Woonsocket) right. Not pictured is Jaycee Hohn, (Wessington Springs). The presentation was made during the VFW Valentine’s Day party.

Jerauld County will hold a special election to determine the future of a tax freeze opt out plan that has been proposed by the county board of directors.
The election date had originally been set for February 28 but has since been postponed to be held on Tuesday, March 20.
