Bagging the big cat came with a pretty good story. According to his dad, David Bender, Wessington Springs, Jared had been to the dentist the day before to the hunt. While hunting with a friend, he sat down in the warm sunshine and fell asleep after a two-mile hike. When he awoke the lion was standing several yards away, looking at him. He had a few seconds to see if the cat met the criteria for hunting: not a nursing female; not accompanied by any other mountain lions; etc.

Local cat news

It has been reported several times that mountain lions have moved into Eastern South Dakota. A female and kitten were spotted by Merle Schimke near his farm northwest of Wessington Springs a few years ago. Craig Wenzel found mountain lion tracks seven miles southeast of town while deer hunting two years ago. Another lion was seen in the Lane area. And is was rumored that a mountain lion might have been frequenting South Gulch near Wessington Springs this past fall.

Rita Kolousek, Pukwana and formerly of the Wessington Springs area, was on a hunt with friends, hoping to bag her first elk. She got more than she had hoped for when, after sitting in a draw for 30 minutes, she saw a Mt. Lion approaching them. “He was running with his ears back and I had to think fast,” Rita said, “because when I pulled up and shot he was within eleven steps from us!” The landowner’s wife told her they “could have been pork chops and apple sauce” if she had missed. Upon returning to the area after getting the landowner to comeout to the site, they spotted a herd of elk. “And that is when I shot my first elk,” she said. The cat, Rita and the nice 6X6 bull elk are all shown above. —Craig Wenzel

An old farm home is pictured in the background. After checking with a few groups after Saturday’s opener they reported filling or almost filling their limits. “But we had to work for them” was a common comment. Sunday’s hunt proved to be a mixed bag with some hunters filling and others not scoring as well. Many corn crops still in the field may give the birds a place to hang out and give the hunters less birds to shoot. --True Dakotan/Duke Wenzel

PIERRE, S.D – Mother Nature greeted South Dakota’s hunters with ideal temperatures, blue skies and moderate breezes for Saturday’s opening of the traditional pheasant season.

—————————————————————

Area hunters have varied opening weekend success

Pheasant hunters in Jerauld County hit the fields at noon on Saturday, October 16 and experienced varied success. Some hunters in the Crow Lake area filled their limits within the first hour of hunting on Saturday. Others in parts of the county hunters struggled to average two birds apiece. The season runs through January 2, 2011.

—————————————————————-

“We really couldn’t have asked for a much better day to open our pheasant season,” said South Dakota Game Fish and Parks Wildlife Director, Tony Leif. “Dry weather has helped move the fall crop harvest along and concentrate a good crop of birds in the remaining cover. It was a successful day and it will only get better from here.”

Successful reports came in from many parts of the state. In the northeastern portion of South Dakota, hunters had varied success.

“Hunting pressure was actually fairly light,” said GFP Region 4 Game Manager Scott Lindgren. “From east to west, hunters averaged about ½ a bird per hunter to limits in the west. I expected a few more reports of good success across the region, as a majority of the beans and about half of the corn has been harvested, but hunters found success in CRP, food plots and stripped corn fields. ”

In the central portion of the state, hunter success was a little higher. “Central South Dakota hunters averaged about2-3 birds per hunter,” said Region 2 Game Manager Andy Lindbloom. “Our crop harvest is well ahead of last year. Combine that with good weather and good weather, and that made for full bird bags.

With a dry forecast for next week, Lindbloom said hunting should only get better. Higher number of birds reported seeing.

In the Southeastern portion of the state, hunters found good success in Beadle, Sandborn, Aurora, Jerauld and Minor counties, with 2-3 birds being the average. “Many bigger groups hunting found good success hunting corn strips and had limits by 3 pm,” said Region 3 Game Manager Ron Schauer. “Further south and east hunters averaged 1-2 birds per person. Many of those areas still have around 70 percent of the corn in the fields, so I expect hunting to only get better.”

All three game managers reported fewer violations and accidents compared to last year, as well as slightly lighter hunting pressure than in previous years.

The South Dakota pheasant season will run until January 2nd, 2011. Hunters are allowed 3 rooster pheasants a day. For more information on the South Dakota pheasant season, visit: http://gfp.sd.gov/hunting/small-game/pheasants.aspx

“He was sighted near the SD 34/SD45 junction (20 miles west of Wessington Spring) on Saturday,” he said. “And by Tuesday he was spotted four miles west of Plankinton on Highway 16.”

He looked a little silly when he integrated with a herd of Angus cattle, according to Kavanagh. “He was pretty funny looking out there with those long legs while he was in with the cattle,” he laughed.

The GF&P would like to keep up on his whereabouts so if you see him you might give Kavanagh a call.

Of course, we all know that wild animals –even long-legged, gangly, funny-looking young mooses, meece, we mean moose– can be dangerous and should not be approached.

The photograph of the critter (below) was submitted by Rusty and Jill (Mohling) VanDerWerff, who said, “We saw a moose west of Springs on our way to Miller. It was just north of the sub-station at the junction of 34/45″.

Obviously the moose can’t read as he is seen ignoring a “No Passing Zone” sign.

Canada geese are pictured on a dam a mile northeast of Springs in the photo above. Huge flocks of geese and ducks can be seen all over the county in the air and in area fields where they feed. The snow depth is now officially down to zero inches but many of the deep drifts are still around. A week of temperatures in the 40s and 50s should help melt the drifts and also dry up the farm lots where calving is in full swing. Yup, suddenly life is very good in Wessington Springs. Today (Monday, March 30, 2010) the sun is shining and it’s around 70 degrees!!!! As our parents used to say, every spring, “Well, looks like we made it through another one.” –Craig and Duke
