Repair windows at the country school
Dunham Historical Society is completing another year in its goal of preserving Jerauld County’s rich historical past. Many new and historically valuable items have been added to the museum collection and the archives continue to grow with the addition of new print information.
Visitors were numerous throughout the year. High school alumni here for the school’s graduation centennial, various tour groups, family groups and individuals swelled the visitor population.

The 1928 WS College Makojanjan Year Book includes a photo of our old pool — at the “deep end” with diving tower and slide. I’ve enjoyed the swimming pool photos published in the past in the “True Dakotan” — this is one I’ve not seen.
The diving tower I recall from the 1950s was three levels with a diving springboard on the second level designed and laminated by VanDyke’s LaArco company. The first level was about 3 feet high, the second about 12 feet, and the top deck about 18 feet above the water. There was a 3 foot high rail around this top deck some would climb to get additional height for their dive (Don’t tell my mother!).

Here is a nice website where you can access N.J. Dunham’s “A history of Jerauld County South Dakota”… it’s the rare, brown history book that everyone wants but few own. It is also “searchable”, you type in a word or name and it shows you every place in the 250-page book…. it’s GREAT!- CW

A page from the 1910 Jerauld County history book - available on line FREE
This history book is quite sought after… since it was printed a century ago and includes all of the Jerauld County (SD) history up to that date. If you find them on local auction sales, they are a little “pricey”. This link is free and lets you read your heart out. We have a copy of the history book here in the True Dakotan office and we’ve often been asked about re-printing it and having it for sale. Now you don’t have to pay!! FREE DOWNLOAD (PDF) or read on line http://www.archive.org/details/historyofjerauld00dunh
