THERE IS ALWAYS ROOM FOR SOMETHING NEW IN JERAULD COUNTY… and this time it’s Yaks on the Pat and Deb Fastnacht farm two miles northwest of Crow Lake. The herd of domestic yaks belong to Pat’s aunt and uncle, Monte and Lana Fastnacht, of New Mexico, who operate LaMont’s Wild West in the American southwest. Buffalo have been their claim to fame in the past, but a new interest in other types of exotic animals has them branching out. Watching a food show on TV recently a yak burger was served up to a customer at a fancy restaurant, along with deer, elk and buffalo.
A yak is a long-haired bovine found throughout the Himalayan region of south-central Asia, the Tibetan Plateau and as far north as Mongolia and Russia. In addition to the large domestic animals, their is a small, vulnerable yak population existing in the wild. The wild yaks can weigh as much as 2,000 pounds and stand up to seven feet tall at the shoulder. Domestic yaks are much smaller with the males weighing 770 to 1,300 pounds while the females weigh in at 500-650 pounds.
Domestic yaks are kept primarily for their milk, fiber and meat and as beasts of burden. Their
Although yaks on the Fastnacht farm are a half a world away from their native land, they seem quite at home in Jerauld County. Their
dried dung is an important fuel source all over Tibet.
