HEAVY FROST HAS PROVIDED some beautiful winter scenes around the area over the past couple of weeks. The canon on the lawn at the American Legion building on the south side of town is show beside a frosty cottonwood tree. The frost can be troublesome when it combines with ice to coat power lines. The city electric crew was called out last Thursday morning as ice and frost had caused an outage in the south part of tower. A few outages were also reported in various rural areas around the county with the Central Electric crew being called out.

THE SPRINGS ELEMENTARY 5th and 6th grade classes were already raising money to help make life better for a school girl in Haiti when the earthquake hit last week. The kids and their teachers, Connie McLaughlin and Kelli Schryock, already had over $500 saved to help Remica Dahana Raymond in school. The students and teachers realized that the country could use the money now and it is going to a relief fund that gives 100% of the money to the victims. The rest of the story tells about how the classes’ relationship with the girl from Haiti came about and can be found in your copy of the True Dakotan.

A Wessington Springs woman is being treated for frostbite following an incident that happened at the home of James and Marie Woods during the New Year’s blizzard.
Marie Woods went out to check on the couple’s dog before bedtime, apparently fell and was temporarily knocked unconscious while the temperature was well below zero degrees. She was admitted to Avera Weskota Memorial Medical Center for treatment of severe frostbite on her hands.
She has since been released from the hospital and has returned to her home to recover.

The Wessington Springs Volunteer Fire Department requests property owners in the town to clear snow away from fire hydrants that are located on their property.
In the case of a fire emergency, it would cost the firemen precious minutes to locate and clear a fire hydrant.
The fire department also wants the public to know that there are openings on the force. If you are interested in becoming a fireman please contact Keith Wetzel.

Remember this? Back in the 1950′s –when I was just a kid, REALLY– there was a local guy who did excavating and digging, building roads, earthen dams, and whatever else needed to be done. A.J. Gebhardt was a bit of a genius, actually, able to fabricate about anything you –or he– could imagine. So the Wessington Springs city park had this big hill that kids used for sledding in the wintertime, but A.J. –and probably some of the town council members– decided a rope lift would be good. And they were right. Once A.J. set his mind to it the rope lift would carry us kids back up the hill for another run.
